This 2014 thriller, in my opinion, is the best film Keanu Reeves has done since The Matrix trilogy was released. Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, (former stunt doubles for Reeves), the film depicts the story of John Wick, a retired hit man who seeks vengeance for the theft of his car, and the death of his pet Beagle, which was the last gift he received from his recently deceased wife.
The movie is intense and thrilling, with many scenes leaving you on the edge of your seat. Reeves portrays his character so well, you find yourself cheering for the hit man as he guns down everyone that crosses his path. What is most notable about the film is the action sequences. Much of the choreography looks like a kind of dance of death, which is seamless, fast, and terrifying. As you watch these scenes, you begin to understand why everybody, including Russian mob boss Viggo, is terrified of John Wick. You can easily see the influence of Hong Kong martial arts films and anime as Wick takes down thug after thug. It is both a beautiful and mesmerizing thing to watch.
This character driven and visually wonderful film is intoxicating from start to finish, with a storyline and choreography that seems graceful, and carefully thought out.
I give it 4 out of 5. 🙂
