For a lazy weekend, I like to watch simple, fun and cheesy kind of shows. Most of my Sundays are spent watching shows like Gilmore Girls, Grace and Frankie, and Will & Grace. in between episodes (i.e waiting for the internet to speed up to actually play the episode) I try and find more shows that have potential for Sunday viewing. My most recent find has been the Hallmark show, Good Witch.
I found this little delight on Netflix (of course) and managed to watch the whole thing in one long marathon. It’s amazing how easy it is to marathon shows these days. Once finished I discovered that the show is a follow on to several telemovies, though you do not need to watch the telemovies in order to understand the show.
The show is based in the small town of Middleton USA and follows the story of Cassie Nightingale, the woman whose odd qualities and the fact that she lives in the town’s haunted house, make many consider to be the ‘good witch’ of the community.
The show is made by Hallmark, so you know it is going to be cheesy, tooth rotting sweetness; where the characters all get along and have petty squabbles over the stupidest of things, where every couple is perfect and amazing, there’s some love triangle going on, and there is an overachieving know it all that wants the town to remain rustic and traditional.
Tooth rotting sweetness all around.
But sometimes you need a break from the drama, thrillers and superheroes that generally dominate the tv, and the Good Witch is a great way to get away from it all.
The title would make you think that the show is full of magic of the Harry Potter variety, but there are no wands or spells (that I noticed). Instead, the magic comes from Cassie’s empathy and astute observations. Her magic is of the ‘I have a feeling…‘ variety. Cassie’s wise words are great for practically any situation and it is spooky how spot on her predictions often are. The same goes for the other witches in the family. Cassie’s daughter can see things before they happen, and cousin Abigail, who often seems like a villain, has a way of manipulating people, making people think she is ruining them but is in fact helping them.
My main issue with the show is that the majority of the characters lack a backbone. They let people bully them, cheat on them, manipulate them, and they never say anything to defend themselves. It drives me nuts. Though it is Hallmark, so everything works out in the end, but it is still frustrating to watch sometimes.
Starring Catherine Bell of JAG fame, the show is great for a lazy Sunday viewing. It’s story is simple to follow, the characters are intriguing and the show is overall fun to watch.
I give it a 3.5 out of 5.
Watch if you enjoyed Gilmore Girls, Grace & Frankie, Practical Magic, Charmed, Will & Grace and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
